Gaussian fluctuations for linear spectral statistics of large random covariance matrices

چکیده
Consider a N ×n matrix Σn = 1 √ n R 1/2 n Xn, where Rn is a nonnegative definite Hermitian matrix and Xn is a random matrix with i.i.d. real or complex standardized entries. The fluctuations of the linear statistics of the eigenvalues: Trace f(ΣnΣ ∗ n) = N ∑ i=1 f(λi), (λi) eigenvalues of ΣnΣ ∗ n, are shown to be gaussian, in the regime where both dimensions of matrix Σn go to infinity at the same pace and in the case where f is of class C, i.e. has three continuous derivatives. The main improvements with respect to Bai and Silverstein’s CLT [5] are twofold: First, we consider general entries with finite fourth moment, but whose fourth cumulant is non-null, i.e. whose fourth moment may differ from the moment of a (real or complex) Gaussian random variable. As a consequence, extra terms proportional to |V| = |E(X 11) | and κ = E |X 11| 4 − |V| − 2 appear in the limiting variance and in the limiting bias, which not only depend on the spectrum of matrix Rn but also on its eigenvectors. Second, we relax the analyticity assumption over f by representing the linear statistics with the help of Helffer-Sjöstrand’s formula. The CLT is expressed in terms of vanishing Lévy-Prohorov distance between the linear statistics’ distribution and a Gaussian probability distribution, the mean and the variance of which depend upon N and n and may not converge. Estimation and fluctuations of functionals of large random matrices. (Estiamation et fluctuations de fonctionnelles de grandes matrices aléatoires)
The principal objective of this thesis is : the study of the fluctuations of functionals of spectrum for large random matrices, the construction of consistent estimators and the study of their performances, in the situation where the dimension of observations is with the same order as the number of the available observations. Such a situation shows up very frequently in numerical communications...
متن کاملCorrections to LRT on Large Dimensional Covariance Matrix by RMT
Abstract: In this paper, we give an explanation to the failure of two likelihood ratio procedures for testing about covariance matrices from Gaussian populations when the dimension is large compared to the sample size. Next, using recent central limit theorems for linear spectral statistics of sample covariance matrices and of random F-matrices, we propose necessary corrections for these LR tes...
متن کاملOn Fluctuations of Eigenvalues of Random Permutation Matrices
Smooth linear statistics of random permutation matrices, sampled under a general Ewens distribution, exhibit an interesting non-universality phenomenon. Though they have bounded variance, their fluctuations are asymptotically non-Gaussian but infinitely divisible. The fluctuations are asymptotically Gaussian for less smooth linear statistics for which the variance diverges. The degree of smooth...
متن کاملSpectral analysis of the Moore-Penrose inverse of a large dimensional sample covariance matrix
For a sample of n independent identically distributed p-dimensional centered random vectors with covariance matrix Σn let S̃n denote the usual sample covariance (centered by the mean) and Sn the non-centered sample covariance matrix (i.e. the matrix of second moment estimates), where p > n. In this paper, we provide the limiting spectral distribution and central limit theorem for linear spectral...
متن کاملTracy–widom Limit for the Largest Eigenvalue of a Large Class of Complex Sample
We consider the asymptotic fluctuation behavior of the largest eigenvalue of certain sample covariance matrices in the asymptotic regime where both dimensions of the corresponding data matrix go to infinity. More precisely, let X be an n× p matrix, and let its rows be i.i.d. complex normal vectors with mean 0 and covariance Σp. We show that for a large class of covariance matrices Σp, the large...
